About Us

New Tricks is a literary magazine that began more than twenty years ago. It started out with a couple of guys gathering and producing student and faculty work, and has since evolved into a larger production that includes not only poetry and prose, but also photographs, video, and music. New Tricks is a product of the DSU chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, which was founded more than three quarters of a century ago by Professor Judson Q. Owen of Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota. In 1972, Sigma Tau Delta was admitted into the Association of College Honor Societies and today there are nearly 600 chapters of ΣΤΔ and roughly 225,000 members.  It became an international society in 1988. The Dakota State University chapter of ΣΤΔ was established in the spring of 1993.  DSU's chapter is part of the High Plains Region of the international society.  The official chapter name is Alpha Gamma Lambda (ΑΓΛ).

John Nelson

Dr. Nelson is pleased to work with a group of students who are dedicated to providing access to writing, art, photography, and multimedia artifacts to a global audience. They seek to bring the creative work of the people at Dakota State University to light. He’s glad to be helping them do that. He’s been at DSU since 1996. He writes poetry and encourages others to do the same.

Bry Hoffer

Bry is a "senior" majoring in English for New Media. Her hometown is Jamestown, ND and she is highly involved in all the details that go into graduating in a year. While she enjoys reading and writing in her spare time, she has no time to spare.

Andrew A. Koerner

Andrew is majoring in English for New Media. He calls Freeman, SD his hometown and is a lover of language, humor, and writing with a plethora of pretentious and pithy sayings. Currently, he has far too many projects to make any sort of progress on any of them. You can find him spending most of his time wearing a ladybug hat and pretending to be more of an expert on things than he really is.

Dillon Dwyer

Dillon is majoring in English for New Media. He considers the Whetstone Valley and the town of Milbank, SD to be his homeland. Being blessed with a knack for pulling ideas out of his hat and setting the ball in motion, he considers himself a doer of work.

Drew Zirbel

Drew is majoring in English for New Media. Hailing from Aberdeen, SD, He likes to keep his hands as busy as his brain (which some argue, isn't really that busy). You can usually find him sitting in his room making colorful renditions of mythological figures with Play-Doh or fashioning new fishing lures out of cheap silverware.

Emily Hansen

Emily is a Digital arts and Design major with a specialization in Web Design and minor in Graphic Design. She hails from the Whetstone Valley and the town of Wilmot, SD. In the summer, you can usually find her chilling by the lake, swimming or fishing. During the winter when she is not professionally building snow forts, Emily enjoys snowboarding to pass the time..
